$1 Homemade Bread

Now I know what you're thinking...bread for one dollar? That's ridiculous! Or else it doesn't taste good at all.

Or else I'm lying.

Well, I'll admit that it's not exactly $1...it's one dollar and 15 cents. But still, the point I'm making is that it's CHEAP! And so very delicious! Especially with grilled cheese sandwiches. That's our favorite meal with this bread. and I love it because once it's cool, you can slice it almost as thin as store-bought bread. Without it falling apart.

Did I mention that it's easy too?

I recommend using a bosch mixer or stand mixer, but I've had to knead it by hand before and it works too.

Let's skip to the recipe already!

You'll need:

1 stick butter or margarine, melted

1 cup All-Bran Buds cereal

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp salt

2 cups HOT tap water

1 Tablespoon + 1 tsp Yeast (Approx. 2 packets)

4 1/3 cups flour, divided

DON'T preheat the oven yet.

Combine butter, All-Bran, sugar, salt, and hot water in stand mixer and let sit for 20 minutes or so, to let the All-Bran soften.

Add the yeast and 1 1/3 cups flour. Let sit for 5 minutes or so.

Add the rest of the flour and knead in the mixer for 5 minutes, adding more flour if any dough is sticking to the sides of the mixer. (If kneading by hand, I believe it still takes about 5 minutes.)

Let raise for 30 minutes.

(While the bread is raising, grease two loaf pans with a thin layer of shortening.)

Shape dough into two loaves, then rub each loaf on the bottom of its pan before flipping it upside-down to lay in the pan. (This spreads a good layer of shortening on top of the bread without leaving clumps of shortening.)

NOW, preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

Cover the dough with a thin, clean dish towel and let raise for 30 minutes.

Bake the loaves for about 40 minutes. If you start smelling the bread before 30 minutes, check to make sure the bread hasn't started to burn. The loaves will be done if they sound hollow when you tap on them.

Remove the bread immediately from the pans and place onto a clean thin dish towel (can be the same one as before.)

Spread a thin layer of shortening over the top of the loaves to make a soft crust. Cover with a second dish towel and let cool completely before storing in gallon Ziploc bags.

Note: This was originally a roll recipe. If you want to make rolls, use a cookie sheet instead of loaf pans and shape into rolls. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Note 2: This bread can be frozen and placed on the counter or in the fridge to thaw. We usually use it fast enough that we don't have to.
